Comforting Words
When needing comfort or things seem to get on top of me I often go to the Psalms. Most were written by King David who experienced numerous family tensions, a war torn land, work place jealousies, bullying and all sorts of other challenges in his personal life. Many of the Psalms are rants at God, some even contain David’s own vicious thoughts towards those that are harming him. I love David’s honesty.
They also contain wonderful ways in which God can bring comfort and help in trying times. I hope that some of the verses I have chosen will speak to you.
Psalms 3:1-5 Lord, I have many enemies! Many people have turned against me. Many are saying about me, “God won’t rescue him.” But, Lord, you are my shield, my wonderful God who gives me courage. I will pray to the Lord, and he will answer me from his holy mountain. I can lie down and go to sleep, and I will wake up
Psalms 9:9 The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.
Psalms 12:5 But the Lord says, “I will now rise
Psalms 18:6 In my distress I screamed to the Lord for his help. And he heard me from heaven; my cry reached his ears.
Psalms 22:19 O Lord, do not stay far away! You are my strength; come quickly to my aid!
Psalms 34:18 If your heart is broken, you’ll find God right there; if you’re kicked in the gut, he’ll help you catch your breath.
The following verses were what David experienced having said some of the things in the above verses
Psalms 30:1-3 I give you all the credit, God— you got me out of that mess, you didn’t let my foes gloat. God, my God, I yelled for help and you put me together. God, you pulled me out of the grave, gave me another chance at life when I was down-and-out.
Psalms 34:4-6 God met me more than halfway, He freed me from my anxious fears. Look at him; give him your warmest smile. Never hide your feelings from him. When I was desperate, I called out, and God got me out of a tight spot.
