He’s always there

Some of you may know that I coach a puppet and creative arts team. Our next performance is at a Care home for the elderly and I have just finished typing up the lyrics for our next practise. Even without music I think you might find the lyrics moving:

When the tears are streaming down your face
And the whole world is on your case
Jesus offers you amazing grace
To make you feel His love

When the world around you fills your heart with fear
And there is no-one there to dry your tears
Call on Jesus, He is always there
To make you feel His love.

These are just a few of the words but it really made me think about my faith. Do I love and trust Jesus only when things are going well in my life? It is easy at such times. What about the times mentioned in these lyrics? How does my faith help me in those times?

From personal experience I know that it is sometimes easy to lose sight of God when the weight of the world is on my back and yet when I look back I can see He never left me. Then when the tough times hit again I think back and get strength from remembering His love and care.

I guess that is what the poem “Footprints in the sand” is trying to say. As you read it I hope that whatever you are going through at the moment, you find it helpful.

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.

In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two sets of footprints, other times there was one only.

This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life, when I was suffering from anguish, sorrow or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints, so I said to the Lord,

“You promised me Lord, that if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life there has only been one set of footprints in the sand. Why, when I needed you most, have you not been there for me?”

The Lord replied, “The years when you have seen only one set of footprints, my child, is when I carried you.” (Mary Stevenson, 1936)
