The Story: A covenant

A little 5 year old girl was having a troubled-filled day, arguing back and forth with her mother.

Finally, her mother in exasperation said, “Jenny, I want you to sit in the corner right now! And don’t you get up until I tell you to!”

Little Jenny went over to the corner and sat down a few minutes, and as she thought about it, she yelled out to her mother, “Mum, I’m sitting down on the outside, but I am standing up on the inside!”

Most of of us have a “I’m-standing-up-on-the-inside” nature. Everyone of us at sometime or another in our lives wants to buck authority and resist the rules.

Very often, and mistakenly, we view God as a Judge and a cosmic killjoy. Nothing could be further from the truth. This week in chapter 5 we look at “10 rules” but hopefully through eyes that are slowly becoming accustomed to seeing God as someone who wants good quality friendships with us as well as helping us achieve better relationships with those around us.

In the ten commandments God gives guidelines for how we treat God and each other. You can read it for yourself in Exodus 20:1-7. Imagine what the world would be like if the entire human race adhered to these rules. The trouble is that our sin nature resists God’s guidelines.

During our celebration service this week we will be looking at Commandments 1-4  that deal with our relationship with God and then during the week in our life groups we will be focussing on Commandments 5-10 guide how we treat other people.
