The Story: Overcoming Giants
In chapter 11 of The Story the life of a young shepherd boy called David is about to be changed through a bizarre twist of fate as he finds himself in the right place at the right time. How David deals with challenges, prejudice, discouragement and criticism is both an inspiration and example of how to rely on God in trying times.
One incident in this chapter is very familiar to most of us. It is when David faces the giant Goliath and defeats him. This catapults him into public life and problems that he has never had to face before.
Have you ever faced something so big, a problem, a trial, a difficulty, that it seemed impossible to overcome? These things are giants in our lives. Not literally a 3 metre tall person. Your giant may be an illness, depression, worry, fear, an addiction, a habit, an attitude, a sin, financial trouble, failing marriage, broken relationship, a lawsuit or unemployment. David shows us that we need to face our giants head on, and step out in faith believing God will help us overcome them. This might mean eliminating them, or it might mean God helps us to bear the burden so they no longer have a grip on our life.
There is a children’s song that goes, “With God’s power working in us we can do more than we can ask or imagine”. I pray that like David you will get help with whatever giant you are facing this week.
