The Story: The Judges

We now come to a 300 year period in The Story that is known as the period of the Judges. A book in the Bible called Judges relates the events of these 300 years. These judges could throw you in jail, but they are known mostly for getting God’s people out of jail. The people were truly blessed by God.

But there is a problem. Sin. Sin still reigns in the hearts of the people as they make the decision to do things their way and not according to God’s instructions.

One of these poor choices had disastrous consequences for this newly developing country.

They did not drive out all the Canaanites this led to them to adopting the religion practised by these people. The result was that many people started to turn away from the very God that had miraculously and patiently got them to this land.

So God sets up a system of judges. As you read the chapter you will discover that these judges did more than make court rulings. What they did I will leave you to discover for yourselves.

In chapter 8 once again we see God powerfully intervening when His people cry out to Him for

help. When the people pray, God responds with deliverance.

In my own life I so often go ahead and make decisions relying on my own wisdom and strength. When I remember to ask God for guidance He has always answered my prayers although not always when and in the way I would have preferred. When I look back I can see that although it might not have been to my liking, the answer was always the best for me.

I hope that as you journey through The Story with me that you too will discover a God who knows what is happening to you and will respond when you pray.

In the coming week we will be looking at two characters Gideon and Samson. You can check them out for yourselves in chapter 8 of The Story or you can read it in The Bible in Judges chapters 2-4, 6-8 and 13-16
